Akal stay consists of 3 sharing rooms, 1 shared bungalow and 2 private rooms. Food education is vital to the future of our individual health – as well as that of the planet. Globally there has been a rapid increase in diet-related health conditions in recent decades. In many places people face food poverty with hunger affecting over 800 million people across the world. Plus 60% of carbon emissions come from animal agriculture and poor management of resources. The global food system has to solve these issues, this food policy, supply and distribution is not sustainable and must change on a global level, so why not starting on our plate?
However, that change will not happen overnight so at Akal we believe that action at a local level will help create change that influences our local community and subsequently the wider world.
In the modern society many people are short of time, money and skills to cook healthy, nutritious and affordable meals. Our community kitchen provides solutions to these issues whilst inspiring people to eat food that is good for themselves, the planet and animals. Simply harvesting and cooking, very often dancing all together, experimenting the local plants and tropical fruit of the island is a powerful way to enjoy life and our body nourishing mind and soul one bite at the time. Monoculture agriculture has depleted soil nutrients, destroyed biodiversity, and consumed excessive amounts of water and pesticides. By creating a food forest, we are re-creating a biodiverse ecosystem that sustains itself and humans. Within a food forest, insects and other animals are welcome to sustain and protect the environment.
It requires significantly less water as the thick layer of organic material on the soil and the intricate root system retains humidity for longer periods of time, growing an abundant amount of food.
The food forest also produces high yields of vegetables and fruits, all co-existing on the same ground and supporting each other’s growth and well-being.
